The Sisters of Mercy founded their convent school in Pump Street to provide education for girls in Derry.
The school moved to Artillery Street where the High School was formed (Ard Scoil na Maighdine Mhuire – Convent of Our Lady of Mercy School).
The school moved to its site on the Thornhill estate on the Culmore Road, expanding its facilities to meet the growing demand for quality education.
Thornhill College became established as a voluntary grammar school and leading institution for academic excellence, dedicated to the education and empowerment of young women in the Derry area.
Thornhill College was named as a Specialist School for Physics and Mathematics.
Our current modern and state-of-the-art school was opened across the Culmore Road from the former site of the college.
Thornhill College remains one of the most respected grammar schools in Northern Ireland, with a thriving alumnae network and a commitment to nurturing the talents of future generations.
